Is Fibre Becoming Just as Important as Location?

Fibre to the home connections offer far higher connection speeds than that possible by standard coaxial or copper cables. A single copper pair can carry around six simultaneous conversations, while a single fibre pair will carry more than 2 million. It is highly unlikely that any home environment will ever need to have that many phone calls coming in, fibre is the only current cabling system that is capable of carrying the high data that is going to be needed for current and next generation digital entertainment and connectivity. Fibre also allows the bundling of telephone, video, audio, television, internet and all other digital data services into a single FTTH broadband cable.
Sounds good? Of course it does and that is why properties that have fibre connectivity are not only becoming more sought after, but are also selling or renting for more. In fact connectivity is becoming almost as important as location when it comes to choosing properties. As more tenants come to expect high speed internet access for work and entertainment, smart homes will become the de facto choice for both South Africans and international visitors.
Fibre is expected to be the dominant communication medium for the foreseeable future and the only method that we have available to avoid the inevitable digital bottleneck. This bottleneck is not only expected to affect private users but business as well. We have already seen the massive growth of digital commerce globally and South Africa needs to quickly jump at the opportunity to increase the amount of ICT jobs in the South African market.
